Surface
from sketch to 3D
Same background as with the roadbike headtube-section. Trying to bring the sketch and surfacing idea into CAD. The design should also consist of a sharp shoulderline-ish line that connects the toptube to the downtube. That creates a kind of unique graphic on the side of the headtube. That itself is nothing new, as some bike manufacturers out there do something similar. It wasn’t my intention to do something especially unique tough.
When the design was set, it was time to sculpt it in 3D. The design, the lines and surfaces itself worked in 3D as expected, but somehow it turned out to be a big challenge to link those surfaces together. When checking the surfaces with the zebra-layover, there always seemed to be an unintended edge, dent or bubble in some areas. Even with guidelines and different approaches to the surfaces there seemed to be no way to completely get rid of them. Especially when later being visualized in the rendering program those mistakes were visible. In the end tough, it is the question if surfaces really have to be perfect in CAD. Production, base-coat and livery in the end would cover some of the mistakes anyway. For me tough, I’m not satisfied with the current state of the surfacing, but I still wanted to show you the result.
